Direct 415-321-2045

Sande Smith combines strategic communications, creativity and aspirational storytelling to support the Foundation’s mission. Sande leads the Foundation's communications efforts which combine donor communications, public policy communications, media relations, online communications and rallying support for legislation. AS a result, the Foundation has raised its profile and increased the number of people who engage with the mission. Over the past four years, she has launched a new web site and blog that feature the voices, work and perspectives of our grant partners, Women’s Policy Institute fellows, donors and allies; exponentially increased the Foundation’s email list; tripled our followers on social media; and showcased the Foundation’s work in state-wide news outlets.

Prior to the Women’s Foundation of California, she was director of communications at the Global Fund for Women, where she designed and led an integrated social media and online communications function. She produced the Global Fund’s publications, and received Wilmer Shields Rich awards for the Annual Reports and newsletters she produced.

Sande has gained coverage in local and national publications such as The Sacramento Bee, The San Francisco Chronicle, the Contra Costa Times, and USA Today. She has worked as a writer, editor and public relations professional with organizations such as the Nationwide Women’s Program of American Friends Service Committee, Ruder Finn, Inc. and the Free Library of Philadelphia.

Sande has authored books about Martin Luther King, Jr., and Malcolm X, and co-authored a book profiling women of the 20th century. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Portuguese and Brazilian studies from Brown University. A past president of the San Francisco chapter of the Public Relations Society of America, she currently serves as a board member.
