The change we create isn’t magic, and it isn’t just through writing checks. Instead, the Foundation has developed a unique model for driving systemic change.

At the Women’s Foundation of California, we’ve spent 30 years on the ground supporting, training and fueling the fiercest women leaders, fanning the winds of change for women and girls throughout California. From the beginning in 1979, we knew it was about more than getting and writing checks. Instead, the Foundation is a force for social change.

We’re not out to tweak things here and there. We insist on a comprehensive approach to advance the status of women and girls in our state. In short, every grant provides entrée into a vibrant and diverse community of women leaders, and access to priceless knowledge — knowledge that strengthens grassroots organizations, that says, “Here, this is how laws are made,” and “Welcome, you are now part of a rising movement.” We alone have this model of change, built on these four elements:
