Betty Friedan, in her seventies, who commented blandly in a discussion of short hemlines, that she had very nice legs; Ann Richards, as Governor of Texas, late to an official reception with the British monarch, suddenly remembered her mother’s plaintive caution in childhood, “Where are you rushing? To meet the Queen of England??!” Actually yes, mom; Pat Schroeder who, during the time when she was esteemed Dean of Congressional Women, donned the outfit of a 5’8” Easter bunny on the White House lawn; and Aileen Adams who has such a compelling, competitive spirit that in a card game with two nine-year-olds—her daughter and mine—one of them observed without irony, “She’s a good winner.” All of them have been outspoken for those who have no voice, fierce and strong for those who have no power, and they never gave up. Good winners, all.
