"Overcrowding is the norm as eight women are forced to live together in small 12 x 20 foot rooms. Imprisoned women are rarely served fresh vegetables or fruit. They lack proper medical, dental and mental health care."

These were some of the conditions Anuja Mendiratta witnessed at the largest women's prison in the United States, the Central California Women's Facility. Read about this recent visit organized by the Race, Gender and Human Rights Fund of the Women's Foundation of California and the Women Donors Network.

Sign Petition to Stop Four-point Shackling of Pregnant Women

While California already has legislation prohibiting the shackling of prisoners during birth, it does not forbid the shackling of pregnant women at many other times. Many California jails use the restrictive method of four-point shackling during transport, which involves chaining a pregnant woman around the belly, ankles and wrists. Movement is further restricted because the prisoner is shackled to other prisoners.

Currently, nearly two-thirds of county jails shackle pregnant women in ways that could cause miscarriage or other injuries. Bill AB 1900 seeks to stop this inhumane treatment of pregnant women.
