Priority Communities
The Women’s Foundation of California believes that the central issues of feminism today are those of race, social class and sexuality. Therefore, we go wherever the most severe inequities exist for women of color, immigrant women, single mothers, elder women, low-income, lesbian, bisexual and transgender women. We know the leaders in these communities best understand their needs, and we support them in forming solutions for long-term, systems change. We aim for nothing less than full civil and legal equity. Low-income: We define low-income based on how much money working adults need to meet their basic needs, without subsidies. Unlike the federal poverty standard, we account for the realistic costs of living and working as they vary by both family size and geographic location. Our definition includes people who do not identify as being of European American descent, including African American, Latino, Asian (South, Southeast, East), Pacific Islander, Middle Eastern, Native American or indigenous and people of mixed race descent. This encompasses permanent residents, undocumented immigrants, refugees, asylum seekers and those who have been granted asylum status.
