Background and Purpose

While hundreds of millions of grant dollars are awarded to California's environmental health and justice organizations each year, groups in the Central State Region of California are traditionally underfunded. Yet, the need for support in this region is tremendous.

Many existing community organizations lack the resources available to nonprofits in larger metropolitan areas, and their small size and community focus makes it difficult to network with other groups in the field.

The Women's Foundation of California and The California Endowmenthave partnered to identify unmet funding needs in the Central State Region and help create networking opportunities.

Part of that work includes mapping the Central State Region through a scan and building a Central State Region database of organizations conducting environmental health and justice work in this region. The scan is now a searchable online public database for community based organizations and funders to use as a resource. As with any database, there are inevitably changes in staffing or issue focus and sometimes inadvertent omissions of organizations.
