Aging with Dignity

Background
Aging Justice Replication Project Description
Requests for Proposal Criteria

The Women’s Foundation of California is proud to announce our Women's Policy Institute Aging Justice Replication Project. Funded by the Atlantic Philanthropies, the project will allow us to replicate our policy advocacy training program on aging justice issues in three to four key regions of the US.

Furthermore, it will foster the participation of women spanning all ages who can advocate effectively for policies that ensure all women – especially women of color, low-income women and women of diverse sexual orientation and gender identity -- can age with dignity, economic and health security, and in the place they choose.

Background:

In 2008, the Women's Foundation of California launched the Elder Women’s Initiative with our partners: The California Endowment, Insight Center for Community Economic Development, New America Media and UCSF Institute for Health & Aging. During the two-year initiative, we convened diverse and courageous elder women and their allies to advocate for policies that allow all Californians to age with well-being, dignity and economic and health security.

The results were many:

  • Community listening sessions which provided poignant and vivid testimonies regarding the challenges facing elder women and their families.
  • Our report: AGEnda for Action report which presented the Initiative’s findings and provided recommendations for how funders, policymakers and advocates can ensure all Californians age with dignity. Read the Executive Summary of this report as a free download in five languages: Simplified Chinese, Hmong, Khmer, Korean, and Spanish.
  • The piloting of an Elder Issues team within the Women’s Policy Institute, which proposed AB 324 (Beall, D – San Jose) ‘Elder Economic Dignity Act of 2009.’ The bill reached the Governor’s desk with bipartisan support and the support of over 100 organizations statewide. Although the bill was ultimately vetoed, advocates have revived it as AB 2114 (Beall, D-San Jose) the ‘Elder Economic Dignity Act of 2010.' It will require the state’s Area Agencies on Aging (AAA) to use the Elder Index when developing their mandated area plans. Download information on AB 2114 including a fact sheet and talking points.
  • Financial support from Atlantic Philanthropies to replicate an intergenerational policy advocacy training program for women community leaders in three to four key regions of the United States. We are now seeking partners to join us in fulfilling this vision. See below for more information.
