PG&E Women’s Network Employee Association 2007 Scholarship Program This year PG&E Women’s Network Employees Association, in partnership with the Women’s Foundation of California, administered $25,000 in scholarship grants to 10 deserving young women, the largest amount to date. The scholarship winners reside in the PG&E territory, represent the diverse customer base, maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher, are in service to their community, demonstrate leadership skills and have financial need. The Women’s Foundation of California received a $3,000 grant award for their partnership with PG&E. The scholarship winners are… Amber Arnold a graduate of Merritt Middle College High School in Oakland. Amber is student body president and yearbook editor-in-chief. She volunteers at a recreation center in her community working with young children. She will attend Duke University studying Spanish and French and aspires to become a United Nations Interpreter. Veronica Cortes is a graduate of Roosevelt High School in Fresno where she founded Project Impact, a club that helps students learn about college opportunities. She produced a documentary about community leaders in the Central Valley through the Latino Legacy Project. She will attend Cal State Fresno and aspires to be an elementary school teacher. Sierra Hartman is a sophomore at the University of California at Berkeley. She is a sign language interpreter for the deaf and currently majoring in Legal Studies and aspires to practice adoption law. Evelyn Martinez-Salazar is a graduate of San Leandro High School. She served on the student body association and founded the French Club. She helped initiate her high school’s first Young Women’s Empowerment Conference. She will attend the University of California at Davis and aspires to be a pediatrician. Lauren Michael is a graduate of Stockdale High School in Bakersfield. She is a leader in the Future Farmers of America and volunteers as a tutor. Lauren will attend Fresno State University and aspires to be a high school teacher. Linda Nguyen is a graduate of Skyline High School in Oakland where she served as the president of the Key Club. She’s also led fundraising campaigns for Building with Books to build schools in developing countries. She will study Biochemistry at UCLA and will pursue a career in the medical field. Minn Oh is a graduate of Mills High School in Millbrae where she was president of the Youth Development Initiative. She also volunteers with the American Red Cross. She will attend the University of California at Berkeley and study Neuroscience with aspirations to become a doctor. Betsabe Ollervides graduated as valedictorian of Roosevelt High School in Fresno with a 4.26 GPA. She was Vice President of the Math, Engineering and Science Club. She tutored other students to help them pass the state high school exit exams. She will be studying Electrical Engineering at Fresno State University. Clarissa Uribe is a graduate of Roosevelt High School in Fresno. She was the student body vice president and president of Teens Against Tobacco Use. She advocated for two years and succeeded in helping to pass a no-smoking law in Fresno parks to protect children from second hand smoke. She will attend Fresno State University. Katrina Vo is a graduate of Life Academy High School in Oakland. She is a youth representative for Oakland’s San Antonio District and a youth coach for an afterschool health and fitness program. She will attend UCLA in the fall and aspires to be an Optometrist for underserved communities in Oakland. Congratulations, 2007 scholarship winners! The next PG&E/WNEA scholarship application will be available in April 2008.
